Curated and hosted by poet Kim Moore, our contemporary poetry reading series continues throughout 2024. We will be listening to what poets have to say about our turbulent times, and how poetry can cross borders to challenge, delight and inspire us. Each online event in the series is part reading, part open mic – and the theme of the open mic changes every time!
Our next event will feature poet, artist and video film maker Imtiaz Dharker. Imtiaz was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 2014 for her fifth collection Over the Moon and her services to poetry. Her latest collection Shadow Reader is threaded through with ideas around prophecy and encounters with both people and creatures. William Wordsworth often depicted the Romantic poet as a prophet, but in 'Ode on Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood', it is a child who is recognised as having other worldly knowledge when he writes 'Mighty Prophet! Seer blest!/On whom those truths rest /Which we are toiling all our lives to find.'.
Our open mic theme this month is to bring a poem that engages with the idea of the future – whether this is through prophecy or an encounter with a prophet, with an imagined future or an alternative ending – please feel free to interpret this theme widely!
Open mic slots are limited and must be booked in advance.
