The Disabled Ramblers is a small national charity working to help those with limited mobility to enjoy the countryside. For further information on our activities, please go to our website: https://disabledramblers.co.uk/ and downloadable our publication "Let's Go Rambling".
This ramble offers the chance for those with limited mobility to enjoy the delights of Whinlatter Forest Park, using a mobility scooter, on an informal, relaxed day in the company of like-minded friendly people. It is one of a programme of 24 rambles in various parts of the country, normally restricted to members, but in this case, specially opened to a limited number of pre-booked guests for whom there will be no charge unless a scooter is hired.
The new (in 2023) 'WOW' Trail is 4 miles long on hilly forestry gravel roads. It climbs 600ft (200m), to the purpose-built viewing area, which is complete with interpretation boards. The viewing area gives a spectacular panoramic view that includes Bassenthwaite Lake and many of the Northern Lake District Fells, including Skiddaw and Blencathra. We hope to be accompanied by a Whinlatter Forest Park Volunteer Ranger who will be able to highlight points of interest.
You must have booked a place to attend this ramble. You are welcome to bring an able-bodied friend or family member too, but please let us know when you book.
Participants will gather in a segregated parking area, with disabled spaces, by 09.15am for a prompt 10.30 departure. In addition to the accessible toilet behind the Visitor's Centre, there will be an accessible toilet tent set up at lunch time on the ramble. There will be a rescue trailer on the ramble in case of scooter breakdown or emergencies.
Scooters must have a robust battery and suspension/wheels capable of the terrain and distance. There will be a small number of scooters available to hire on the day if you don't have one or yours would not cope with the terrain. Please contact us to find out more and book one. You must be 14 to drive a powered mobility vehicle and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Dogs are welcome on a short lead in line with our Dogs on Rambles policy (https://disabledramblers.co.uk/policies/).
