Largely constructed around 1904 the main Blencathra FSC buildings were originally used as a ‘Sanatorium’ due its "wholesome aspect", being sufficiently isolated from any town or village and having a view over “one of the most striking bits of scenery in the Lake District”. The site was purchased by the Field Studies Council in 2013 and substantial improvements have been made to the buildings, including sustainable biomass heating and water supply. The centre's main use now is the provision of courses for schools and universities, but alongside these activities we also offer self-catering accommodation in our traditional stone built cottages. The cottages have been modernized to provide simple, environmentally sustainable, yet comfortable accommodation in this peaceful location on the side of the mountain overlooking the valley below. The cottages are available on a weekly basis from Saturday 16.00 to Saturday at 10.00. Also NEW FOR 2018 is our refurbished Lonscale building, which offers self catering/catered accommodation for group parties of up to 28 guests.
Facilities vary between cottages. Please do contact us to let us know if you have any specific requirements. Note: Access for wheelchair users is at the Lonscale unit only.
