Fancy a day at the races? Head to Cartmel, where the annual Cartmel Races makes for a great, family-friendly day of fun. As well as racing, there are also local stalls, food and drink, and a fairground. Pack a picnic and spend the day at this popular event - dogs are welcome too.

Farmer's Markets

The summer months are the perfect time to visit a local farmer’s market, and we’ve got plenty to choose from! The Sedbergh Artisan Markets are held throughout the summer months; there are also farmer’s markets in towns and villages including Kendal, Brampton, Penrith, Cokermouth and Keswick. Visit one to pick up some delicious Cumbrian produce, and meet the makers behind our local delicacies.

Happy Birthday Peter Rabbit at The World of Beatrix Potter

It’s 120 years since the much-loved Beatrix Potter character, Peter Rabbit, first leapt onto our pages in print form. Celebrate the occasion by visiting some of the locations Beatrix Potter lived in, and was inspired by, across the Lake District, Cumbria. Throughout the summer, The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere is holding a special Birthday theatre show, Happy Birthday Peter Rabbit, with the option to enjoy a party themed lunch too.

Ullswater Steamers

Fish & Chip suppers on Ullswater Steamers

Sail away on Ullswater as the sun sets, with Ullswater Steamers’ famous Fish & Chip Supper Cruises. Hop on board at Pooley Bridge, and enjoy a cruise of the lake at a relaxed pace as you watch the stunning scenery pass by, accompanied by a fish and chip supper and live music from Pete Lashley. Held every Tuesday evening between the 5th July - 30th August, it’s a great way to get out on the water while staying dry and well fed!

See over 150 classic vehicles at this popular festival, held in Barrow’s town centre, including vintage cars, buses, motorbikes and plenty more. There’s a whole host of transport themed fun to enjoy, including bus tours; a 1950s themed street; music; train rides; and more! Solway Coast Cycle Festival

Solway Coast Cycling Festival | 23 July


The second ever edition of this cycling event takes place on the pretty Silloth Green this July - and there’s plenty for all to enjoy. Located on the scenic Cumbrian coast, there will be everything from guided bike rides to kids skills sessions; bike check and fix sessions; yoga; food and drink; and more.

Taste Cumbria Maryport | 13 - 14 August


For fans of local food and drink, the Taste Cumbria events are a must. Taste Cumbria Maryport takes place during the summer season, offering a ‘taste of the sea’: the coastal town will host a producers’ market, hot food stands and live music to name a few. A young entrepreneurs market will showcase young talent; there’ll be a Cake Off competition; family fun including face painting; and much, much more. The event will also highlight fish and seafood from Maryport and other local harbour towns.

Visiting later in the year? There’s also Taste Cumbria Cockermouth over the 24 / 25 September; and Taste Cumbria Christmas over the 10 / 11 December.

Holker Fest | 3 - 4 September 2022


This year sees the first ever Holker Fest, packed with family fun and local produce. Formerly the Holker Chilli Festival, the popular chilli eating competition will return, with participants competing to see who can eat the hottest chilli. There will also be local market stalls and plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy.

Westmorland County Show

Westmorland County Show | 7 - 8 September 2022


This popular country show makes for a fantastic day out on the fringes of the Lake District, with a huge amount to explore. See animals like alpacas, horses, cattle, sheep and goats at the livestock show; discover interactive displays at the Learning for Life Marquee, and even watch traditional sports like Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling. There’s local produce in the Food Hall, as well as the chance to try out local arts and crafts, or pick something up to take home.
