  • Cycling Cycling

    There are cycle routes and mountain bike trails all around our site at Coniston. Some are flat, some hilly, some paved, some muddy. Check out the nearest National Cycle Route to follow a proper trail. 

  • Walking Walking

    Many hikers favour The National Park’s fells, to enjoy the jaw-dropping views of the lakes below. Scafell Pike is England's highest mountain if you’re looking for a challenging route. More intermediate ramblers might prefer the tracks of the Old Man and Tarn Hows. Routes are detailed on the Lake District website.

  • Things to try Things to try

    See the remains of the Coniston Coppermines in a self-guided tour, which will give you the insights into how the copper mining industry developed and it’s a great glimpse into the lives of the miners and their families who earned their livelihoods from it.

     

    Set sail on a family voyage with Ullswater Steamers, through the valleys that are referred to as the ‘Dark Lake’ in Arthurian Legend, where it was believe monsters used to live beneath the dark waters of Ullswater. The perfect opportunity to explore the area and even see England’s third highest mountain Helvellyn.

     

    A visit to the Lake District wouldn’t be complete without a trip to see Aira Force, possibly the most famous of the Lake District waterfalls, with the main force falling 70 feet from below a stone footbridge. Afterwards, whet the appetite of watersports enthusiasts with plenty of opportunities for adventures on the water at Ullswater Valley, including canoeing, sailing and even swimming.

    One of the ‘best casual dining’ restaurants is The Steam Bistro, with its welcoming atmosphere and fresh, local ingredients. They also allow you to bring your own alcohol for a small corkage fee.

     

    If you want to stay nearer to the campsite, follow the footpath north along an abandoned railway line to The Ship Inn, part of the Robinsons real ale brewery. Situated on the hill overlooking the village of Coniston, the pub is popular with walkers who are on the Cumbrian Way trail.

     

    For light bites or just tea and café, pay a visit to The Bluebird Café, sat right on the shores of Coniston Water so you can sit back and admire the views whilst you eat.

  • Family days out Family days out

    Get up close and personal to unforgettable wildlife with Predator Experience, located in Ayside, just over 30 minutes from the campsite, where you can walk with wolves, fly an eagle or meet and greet foxes. Booking in advance is essential.

     

    Head to the picturesque village of Hawkshead, just 5 miles from the campsite and visit the World of Beatrix Potter museum, as well as the Beatrix Potter gallery which hosts the original sketches and paintings of Peter Rabbit and friends.

     

    Venture to the treetops as you climb 40ft into the canopy of an ancient oak wood with Treetop Trek, located at Brockhole in Windermere. There are 35 daring challenges to tackle including walkways, slippery slides, tunnels and a giant trampoline, not to mention the 250m zip wire descent.
