What we do
Long House Studios is a small, friendly art school in the heart of the Lake District, offering a range of short, intensive art courses for adults and young people.
It was established by artist and educator Louise Sturgis, who has exhibited and taught widely, including at The Royal Academy of Arts, The Royal Drawing School and The Ashmolean Museum.
Our teaching studios are in the barns of a 17th century lake district farmhouse in the idyllic and peaceful valley of Kentmere. They open onto a beautiful rural garden, adjacent to woodland, surrounded by fields and fells. Everyone who comes here is bowled over by the location.
Each course is taught by one of our expert artist tutors and progresses in response to the individual participants and their work. We always begin with drawing, which provides an immediate and natural starting point, and is a catalyst for new ideas and creativity.

Classes will encourage you to look attentively, to experience quiet contemplation, and seeing anew, the true beauty of the world around you. You will be introduced to different processes and techniques, enabling you to find ways to express yourself freely, and to build on your own experience and vision. Unlike some more 'product led' courses, leading everyone to produce a particular result, we embark on a creative journey, reflecting on and responding to the work produced each day.

A course at Long House Studios offers in depth, high quality tuition and personal, sensitive guidance to artists of all abilities, from complete beginners to the more experienced.
Where to find us
We are in the valley of Kentmere, three miles north of the village of Staveley which is between Kendal and Windemere in the English Lake District.
