Design and create your own beautiful Stained Glass panel on this 2 day workshop with Lizzy Hippisley-Cox of Eden Stained Glass

Working with beautifully coloured and clear, textured glass - all provided by Lizzy - you will learn how to handle, cut safely and to 'lead up' a square panel over the two day course of approximately 8 inches square.  Obviously all glass, tools, equipment, expertise and enthusiasm is provided by Lizzy, who is highly skilled in preserving these jewels of our heritage and has spent many years advising on and restoring original stained glass windows in our cathedrals and churches countrywide.

Although traditionally stained glass is associated with place sf worship, these days it is increasingly popular when used in homes for decoration. Staining glass is an ancient art of using colour and light to create atmosphere and to depict images and stories.

The panel you make could be for a place in your house or could be built into a window or frame as a hanging panel. Please bring any ideas you may have in terms of design and Lizzy will assess what will be possible in the time allowed.

Please bring: Kindly note there will be a £30 materials charge payable directly to the tutor on the day. This price will cover the 8" x 8" glass panel. A sketchbook for ideas and notes, an old shirt to work in and thin disposable gloves in your size. Also if appropriate, don’t forget a good pair of glasses to enable close detailed work. All equipment and tools will be provided. If students wish to make a larger glass panel this will be charged extra accordingly.  However, if much larger, please contact Lizzy via us as time limitations might prevent completion. Typically this course runs with 8-9 students. Suitable for all abilities.

A health and safety briefing will be given and the use of safety equipment (provided) will be required. Lead, lead solder and the fumes are toxic substances both to handle and to breathe in. Pregnant women are advised not to handle lead or breathe in fumes. PLEASE DO NOT WEAR OPEN-TOED SANDALS   About the artist: Elizabeth (Lizzy) Hippisley-Cox lives and works in the Eden Valley near Brough. After Art College in Dorset she read for a Bachelors Degree in Medieval Studies at Manchester and fell in love with medieval stained glass. She moved to York in 2009, undertaking an apprenticeship and training at the studios at York Minster Works Department; and further placements to German and Belgian studios in 2011. In 2016 she became a William Morris Craft Fellow with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), which enabled her to travel the UK and France, visiting a great many conservation projects and stained glass studios. All these travels and a desire to settle somewhere beautiful and rural led to her establishing Eden Stained Glass and making Cumbria home.
