What have the Romans ever done for us? The answer is along this 73-mile wall that, even now after nearly 2000 years, remains one of the most impressive feats of engineering in an empire that regularly delivered impressive feats. Hardly surprising that it’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
And by it we mean all of it – the whole 73-mile stretch from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west, right on the Cumbrian coast. You can explore virtually all of the remaining wall and visit some of its key sites. These include Roman forts at Vindolanda, Birdoswald, Chesters and Housesteads; museums at Segedunum and Corbridge; and a state-of-the-art visitor centre at The Sill, just outside Once Brewed.
Within touching distance of the wall is Carlisle, Cumbria’s county town and its only city: a 21st-century urban centre built on 2000 years of history, as you’d expect from a town close to the border with Scotland and a major player in the centuries’ old battles between the two traditional foes.
The formidable fortress of Carlisle Castle, itself built with stones from Hadrian’s Wall, stands proud over the cityscape, while a packed programme of heritage tours, activities and exhibitions offers the perfect introduction to times gone by on the edge of an ancient empire. For more modern pursuits, you can keep yourself entertained by exploring and indulging in the city’s fine collection of restaurants and pubs.
