The Eden Valley is Cumbria at its most peaceful, a haven of pastoral calm and serenity that is the perfect spot to get away from it all, but without having to go too far.
Imagine a landscape of rolling meadows broken up by dry-stone walls and sleepy villages of sandstone cottages, criss-crossed by ancient Scottish droving lanes and paths. Add a handful of historic castles and a sprinkle of prehistoric stone circles and Neolithic forts. And then, just for good measure, add England’s most scenic railway line and England’s highest market town - Alston, at 1000 feet above sea level.
A hidden gem? We certainly think so. Flanked on its western side by the magnificent fells of the Lake District National Park and the equally stunning moorland and forests of the North Pennines to the east (which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), this is England at its finest, where all kinds of country pursuits can be enjoyed at leisure.
Fancy some salmon or trout fishing? The waters of the River Eden are ideal spots, as is Ullswater to the southwest, where you can indulge your passion surrounded by glorious mountain scenery. The valley has plenty of stables and trekking centres if you want to explore the region on horseback, while the Eden Valley Loops run for 84 miles around Ullswater and the North Pennines and are perfect for riders, cyclists and walkers.
Running through it is the Settle to Carlisle line, which cuts a scenic route through the valley and stops at a series of historic villages and market towns, including Penrith, Appleby-in-Westmorland (famous for its horse fair), Armathwaite, Langwathby and Kirkby Stephen.
