If you’ve come to the Western Lake District, chances are you’re looking for something a little more rugged, perhaps even a bit more secluded. You’ve made a fine choice, for in the shadow of England’s highest mountain, Scafell, and its deepest lake, Wastwater, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for.
In the western lakes, the beaches are secluded, the lakes much quieter and the mountains that bit more rugged – which makes for some stunning views and an overall sense that you’re in one of Europe’s most beautiful corners.
With beauty also comes brains, as the western lakes have a rich history that is brilliantly told. Here you’ll find Iron Age forts and historic harbours – each with a rich maritime heritage and a few spicy tales of smugglers.
When you’re done marvelling at the views from St Bees Head, which lies at one end of the famous Wainwright 'Coast to Coast' walk, you can stop off at the Georgian town of Whitehaven and Roman town of Maryport. Then there is Cockermouth, birthplace of William Wordsworth.
Besides Wastwater, the other lakes to explore include Bassenthwaite, which is connected to Derwentwater via the River Derwent. Nearby is Whinlatter, England's only true mountain forest, while Eskdale and Ennerdale valleys are true monuments to the beauty of the area.
