Afternoon Tea in the Sculpture Gallery
The long haul in the afternoon between lunch and supper can now be bridged in considerable style within the lovely setting of the Sculpture Gallery at Lowther Castle. Delicious loose leaf teas, English sparkling wines, cakes, tarts, pastries, sandwiches and scones – all these can now be supped at leisure in the 19th century building, attached to Lowther Castle, that once housed a considerable collection of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.
Lowther Castle & Gardens
A spectacular Gothic ruin set in 130 acres of ancient and romantic Gardens, award winning Lowther Castle is a place to be inspired; by the setting, the story of the colourful characters who lived here, the transformation of the Gardens and one of the largest adventure playgrounds in the UK.
In 1999 the Gardens were overgrown and lost to a commercial chicken farm; the Castle, deroofed in 1957, was derelict. Today, the Gardens have been rescued and Dan Pearson’s 20-year masterplan is being implemented. Treasures include the Garden-in-the-ruin, the Parterre, the Great Yew Avenue, and the Western Terrace with views of the Lake District. The Lost Castle adventure playground, hidden away in the woods, provides endless hours of fun for families. Dogs are welcome everywhere, except the playground and cake table.
In the courtyard, there is the highly visual story of Lowther exhibition revealing a fascinating history, a stylish café, shop and a cycle hub from where Estate trails can be explored on all terrain or electric bikes. History, horticulture, architecture, and fun - a unique attraction with a great deal to offer.
