This quirky little building in the centre of Hawkshead is home to Beatrix Potter’s original watercolour illustrations of her beloved characters. The museum tells the fascinating story of Beatrix’s journey from children’s author to passionate Lake District conservationist and showcases her skill as an artist.
To preserve the fragile illustrations, they are shown in annual exhibitions, so the ones on display today may not be available to see again for several more years. In 2022, The Language of Flowers exhibition chronicles Beatrix’s childhood relationship with flowers, showcases her talent as an artist and illustrator and looks at how Beatrix took inspiration from her own garden at Hill Top for her much-loved ‘little books.’ Discover how Mrs Bunny was a wise herbalist, but not Jemima Puddle-Duck and find out what was behind the characters in The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin and the beautiful floral displays in The Tale of The Patty-Pan.
Entrance one step down from street level with immediate sharp right turn. Then level ground floor access to three rooms. Many steps to first floor gallery rooms (4).
