About

Cairnstones is the personal company of Mountain Leader, Bill Mumford.  With a long and successful career working in Health and Social Care Bill now works as a qualified mountain leader.  No stranger to adventure Bill is a longstanding Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a keen photographer and aspiring poet.  Living in Cumbria he has a deep and enduring love of the fells, its history and literature.

Being in the hills is like a metaphor for life: it is best to walk tall, walk with balance and be aware of the small changes in contours all around us.

Adventure Training:

Confidence in the hills

For those who love being in the mountains but feel held back from lack of confidence.  Bill personally leads all his training days and tailors them to your specific concerns.  It is an immersive day: we discuss the why and what to take with you on the hills and how to use it. We get out there and not only do some navigation but also the use mental strategies for coping with the issues that hold you back.  Also- if all else fails- how to get help in the most effective way.

Walking well on rough and steep ground

Like any physical activity: practice makes perfect.  Or more accurate: practising good technique makes perfect.  If you want to venture into the more remote areas or venture off the path then feeling confident on one’s feet is essential.  Another immersive day where we experience different terrain: boulders, steep grassy slopes and even crossing a beck- can’t guarantee getting back clean but hopefully more confident!

“Just wanted to send you a note to say thank you… I have more confidence and some skills that will help me navigate on my own”

“I really appreciated your patient guidance… you increased my independence by encouraging me to “go and take a look” and suggest the way myself instead of just telling me where to go. I also enjoyed the wide-ranging conversation and the knowledge of the area that you shared along the way”.

Additional Information

A kit list will be supplied as well as information for the day. I shall be strict about ensuring participants are appropriately equipped for the day as your safety and wellbeing, as well as for everyone else in the group, is paramount.  Participants provide their own lunch, drinks and transport to the start. Location to be agreed on booking.  Hikes will go ahead regardless of the weather (so long as we can get to the meeting point!) but will be adjusted as appropriate.  In the extremely unlike event a hike has to be cancelled you will be completely refunded or an alternative day agreed.  Full payment on booking please.
