Canyoning/Ghyll Scrambling/Gorge Walking:
Wow! Awesome, amazing, we go down that?!! Are some of the terms used by clients whilst out in the streams, and becks of the Lake District. We use the ‘classic’ spots and also run for the more open-minded thrill seeker some of the lesser-known spots too. Which in many ways are way better than the hot spots like Church Beck, Eskdale (now over used IOP) and Langdale. These all can be done but there are some gems out there that we don’t have on our website/Facebook as well, it’d just spoil them!
The above descriptions are all the same thing in a nutshell. Canyoning is done in descent, the other two are done in ascent. Sometimes Canyoning is the only way to run these as there are slides and jumps that would only suit a trip in descent.
Experience:
For these 3 activities (all the same) no experience is necessary. Although some fitness is required as we will be doing some EASY scrambling over rocks in the watercourse, you don’t need to have done this before. All demos will be explained and if you don’t like something we can almost certainly by pass/walk around the obstacle in question.
Venues:
As described we can and do use the following:
Church Beck – Coniston
Stickle Ghyll – Langdales
Stoney Cove – Keswick
Esk Gorge – Eskdale
We also run at various other locations through the Lake District and happy to discuss these with yourself when booking with us.
Kit:
Rock n Ridge will provide the following:
• A wetsuit
• Helmet
• Harness (when appropriate)
• Hardware – Karabiners, cows tails etc (when appropriate)
• Buoyancy aid
You will NEED to bring:
• A change of clothes/Footwear for after
• A towel/Robe
• Swimming shorts/bikini – For under the wetsuit
• Trainers, boots/closed footwear – These will get soaked by the way!
• Any medication
• If wearing glasses and prefer contacts then do so
Duration:
A half days Canyon, Gorge, Ghyll scramble will be around 3 hours in duration so: 09:30 – 12:30 – Start times can be moved slightly to accommodate.
Alternatively an afternoon’s session will be 13:00 – 16:00.
Parking:
A note on parking in the Lake District. We’d love it if all the major players in the Lakes got together and did a daily/season-parking permit. Or a bit like Americas national parks, a ticket that then enables you to visit them, drive and park in all the car parks and use the facilities on route! Sadly we are behind the times and don’t operate in this way.
Wherever possible we try and park for free, but sometimes we may need/have to park in car parks like the National Trust. By joining them it could save you £’s when visiting the area.
For this activity it’s a mixture of free, National Trust and private land/free parking.
