Take a closer look at the unique legacy of geology, history, literature and art in England’s breath-taking Lake District, with our expert-led tours.  Our guided walks through spectacular scenery go hand in hand with fascinating insights into the formation of a landscape – ‘deep time’ - that has inspired poets and artists for centuries.

Leave your car behind as we explore the area in comfort, by luxury minibus as well as on foot.  We will spend four nights at an award-winning 10-bedroom country house in Keswick with Lakeland views and a delightful terrace and gardens for guests to enjoy.

Journey with us through 450 million years of geological history, from Wordsworth’s Grasmere to the famous Buttermere and Crummock Water, so beautifully captured by JMW Turner.  Travel from ancient volcanoes and ‘wild and romantic’ valleys to quaint village pubs steeped in history.  Discover the pioneering programme to enhance biodiversity at Ennerdale from an ecologist at the Rewilding Partnership, whose work encourages the natural interaction between features above ground and the geological structures below. 

Our short break includes private, behind-the-scenes visits to two of William Wordsworth’s homes and the Jerwood Centre to see original archive material.  We hear how human relationships with the landscape, from mining at Honister through to the 20th century’s nuclear industry, have evolved and affected Cumbria’s heritage, and how the area is represented and reflected in contemporary culture.

Solo travellers welcome and no single supplement for 2023 tours. Maximum group size 12.
