About

Come and try Via Ferrata at the Honister slate mines. We offer the VF Classic, VF Extreme and VF Climb the Mine. Therefore this offers something for everybody’s ability. Below is a bit more detail about the 3 options available.

VF Classic:

It kind of speaks for itself really…It’s a classic! This award winning activity takes you along the original route of the miners track, which leads to the final summit slopes of Fleetwith Pike – Which if your ticking them is a Wainwright top!?

Not as Scary:

The Classic Lake District Via Ferrata is less challenging than its bigger brother the Extreme. That said it does offer impressive scenery, and gets you into some amazing positions. Terefore for some it will push their comfort zones, and provide a great sense of achievement once completed.

Please read the Key Information:

•    Private ‘your own group’ so not with other Via Ferrata people
•    £50pp
•    Minimum age 10 years
•    Minimum height 1m 30cm tall
•    10 – 15yrs must be accompanied by an adult 18+ years. 16/17 year olds can go on their own.
•    Approx 1.5 – 3 hours in length. Depending on fitness/weather.
•    You do not need previous climbing experience
•    You will be guided throughout the activity by professional mountain guides
•    Security is by a long and thick metal wire which you will be attached to at all times
•    Bring appropriate clothing/footwear – closed shoes/boots. Harness/Lanyards will be provided.
•    This is a SSSI site which means it’s a very environmentally friendly and delicate area – Your instructor will brief you more on this.

** Please note, we will need to meet 20 minutes before our booked departure time. This will then enable us to sort paperwork out. Failure to do so may forfeit your experience, and therefore not be able to participate in your chosen activity!**

Honister Via Ferrata Extreme:

The Lake District Via Ferrata Extreme was launched in 2012, and is a favoured way to get round the course. More full on than the Classic it starts by dropping you down the mountainside via the large and secure metal cables, which are anchored to the hillside. You will be faced will all sorts of challenges, including; vertical ladder climbs, mountain edges, Burma bridges and sky ladders! Just how a Via Ferrata should be!

Top out:

Like the Lake District Classic Via Ferrata, after the final scramble you emerge on top of fleetwith Pike which has some of the best known views of the Lake District and Buttermere lake.

Honister Via Ferrata Lake District Climb the Mine:

Most people have never heard of ‘Climb the mine’ but let me tell you its ace! We actually think this rivals the Classic and the Extreme VF’s. Mainly because its set in a mega and unique location – underground! So perfect for wet weather days, which Honister Lake District has a few! Some of the highlights include; Rope bridges and ladders, zip lines, and Tarzan swing! It really is a lot of fun, bit like a playground for adults. Kids can come too ;-)
