Today, after breakfast we will make our way to Grasmere to discover Wordsworth. It is now over 251 years since the birth of William Wordsworth, yet his works and philosophies are just as relevant today.
Wordsworth and his fellow Romantic poets paved the way for future generations to think about the world differently. This led to the formation of the National Trust in 1895 and laid the foundations for today’s global conservation movement.
Before lunch we are going to visit Dove Cottage which looks exactly as it did in his time and where his most famous poems were written. We will also go to the accompanying renovated museum which is part of a new visitor experience that re-energises the Wordsworth collection by telling the story of his life and poetry in the place he found “Perfect contentment, unity entire.”
From Dove Cottage we will walk around Grasmere village and have some lunch before doing the famous 'coffin route' walk to Rydal Mount. This is a short walk that circles Grasmere and Rydal water. Taking you high above the fells the walk encounters lovely views of Rydal water and Grasmere.
At Rydal Mount we will stop for afternoon cream tea. It is the historic family home of William Wordsworth and where his family still live and well worth a look around.
