In many ways, it is strange that the Romans built and occupied a fort at Ambleside for so long. What could be the purpose of a fort here? In seeking to answer this question, David Breeze considers not only the history of the fort but also the various reasons why the Roman army built forts across northern England within the wider framework of the role of the army in defending the Roman empire.

About the speaker

David Breeze has written extensively on the Hadrian's Wall, Roman frontiers and the Roman army. He was formerly Chair of the International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies and led the team which made the Antonine Wall in Scotland a World Heritage Site. He is an honorary Professor at the Universities of Durham, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Stirling.
