There is something magical about working with indigo dye. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that involves folding, twisting and binding the cloth before dyeing it in an indigo dye bath. During the workshop we will cover different methods of preparing the fabric for dyeing, including stitch resist, binding techniques, Arashi (pole wrapping) and Itajime (board clamping).
We will prepare the indigo dye bath at the beginning of the day, and you will learn how to maintain it so that you can get the best from it. The recipe we work with is suitable for you to use at home. Gill will give you handouts detailing the methods used.
You will create a range of samples and have a chance to try all the techniques throughout the day.
Please bring with you: Sharp scissors and a pair of rubber or latex gloves.
There will be a materials cost of £5 paid direct to the Tutor which includes fabric samples. If you have any old linens you would like to revamp, or some fabric from a project you are working on, please bring it along as long as it is a natural fabric.
Please wear dark or old clothes, or cover up with an old shirt.
