St John and the Evangelist, Osmotherley, is a small and peaceful Victorian church nestled in rolling farmland south of Ulverston. Set within a quiet hamlet, St John’s has an immediately inviting presence. Its coursed slate rubble walls and warm sandstone dressings sit naturally in the surrounding landscape, while the timber bellcote with its tiny slate hung spirelet adds a distinctive charm.
Built in 1873–74 by the renowned Lancaster architects Paley & Austin, it is a graceful example of Gothic Revival design, created as a chapel of ease for a growing rural community.
Inside, the church was planned to seat around 150 people, reflecting the size of the Victorian farming population it served. Before St John’s was built, villagers met for worship in the local school, carrying in portable altar rails each Sunday. The new church brought a welcome sense of permanence, identity and pride to the settlement.
Although modest in scale, the interior often surprises visitors with its stained glass and its gentle, contemplative atmosphere, making it a quiet and worthwhile stop for walkers.
