You are here: Home > Westmorland and Furness Way > Section 6: Ulverston to Furness Abbey
Section 6: Ulverston to Furness Abbey “Along the Furness Coast” (17 miles, taking an estimated 1 to 2 days). This could be further split into 2 shorter days - Ulverston to Newbiggin 14km and Newbiggin to Furness Abbey 13km.
Route Progress:
The path leaves Ulverston alongside Ulverston Canal, this is a popular place to visit locally but not widely known by visitors. An accessible path leads from the town to Canal Foot to meet the King Charles III England Coast path (ECP). This section of the KCIII ECP from Canal Foot to Cavendish Dock is currently being established.
The route follows the coast on existing roads, footpaths and permissive access to Baycliff, with good views across Morecombe Bay ever changing with the tide and the weather.
With care it may be possible to follow the beach to bypass the sections of the KCIII ECP which are not yet open to get back to the Coast Road at Newbiggin but we do not recommend this option.
From here the route follows a mix of road verge, pavement and promenade to Rampside to join the cycleway to Cavendish Dock before leaving the coast for its final destination at Furness Abbey. It is not yet signed but can be followed.
Buses run from Furness Abbey to Barrow and Dalton for train and bus links and there is also a station at Roose. There are plenty of amenities in this area and opportunity to stay overnight and explore some of the local attractions such The Dock Museum, which free to enter, and the nature reserves on Walney Island.
