Selfie Guide

The Lake District, Cumbria is one of the most beautiful places on earth, so it’s no wonder visitors come from all over the world to see the famous views. The famous lakes are flanked by wooded shorelines and forests with the backdrop of England’s mightiest mountains not to mention one hundred miles of stunning coastline. Home to the longest and deepest lakes plus England’s highest mountain, there is no better place to capture the perfect selfie and share it with the world.

Some of our favourite selfie spots

  1. Selfie Guide - Aira Force
Best for: Poets - Aira Force, Ullswater
The sound of water careering into the rocks at the bottom engulfed in a cloud of spray is almost hypnotic. William Wordsworth was inspired to write at this gorgeous waterfall. This could be the scene of your most poetic work.
  2. Selfie Guide - Catbells
    Best for: families - Catbells
Catbells is a manageable and popular walk for families. Once at the summit prepare to be blown away with an aerial view of Derwentwater and beyond that needs capturing on film. The lake is fringed with trees that form a blanket of reds and golds in the autumn.
  3. Selfie Guide - Dog Lovers
Best for: Dog lovers - Latrigg, Keswick
We love dogs in Cumbria and this is a stunning dog walk. With the huge sprawling peak of Skiddaw providing an impressive backdrop, this accessible walk, suitable for those with limited mobility, is one you’ll want to do again and again. The views over Borrowdale are breathtaking. Hopefully your dog will even pose for a selfie!
  4. Selfie Guide - Loughrigg Tarn
Best for: Dreamers - Loughrigg Tarn, Elterwater
Day-dream and contemplate life at Loughrigg Tarn, a hidden treasure. The serene, clear blue water has a reflection that resembles the finest landscape paintings with rolling fells and the rugged beauty of the Langdale Pikes staring back at you. This is a guaranteed Instagram hit.
  5. Selfie Guide - Hadrian's Wall
Best for: History buffs - Hadrians Wall
A visit to Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must for any history fan. This walk is full of locations for a fascinating selfie featuring scenic views and Roman forts.
  6. Selfie Guide - The Hoad
Best for: Visionaries - Hoad Monument, Ulverston
You can’t miss the 100ft lighthouse landmark that stands proudly 400ft above the town of Ulverston. With views right across the cobbled streets and the sands of Morecambe Bay you can see for miles and miles. Perfect for a panoramic pic.
  7. Selfie Guide - Whinlatter
Best for: Wellness seekers - Forests
If you seek peace and tranquillity, then this is your selfie spot. Whinlatter or Grizedale are extensive forests boasting expansive views. Hop off your bike to capture the perfect image.
  8. Selfie Guide - Carlisle Castle. Photo copyright English Heritage.
Best for: City dwellers Carlisle Castle
Standing tall for over nine centuries, this imposing medieval castle is the ideal spot for a selfie with a turret or two in the background.
  9. TV and Film locations - Whitehaven
Best for: Sea lovers - Whitehaven Maritime Walk
Fill your lungs with that delightful sea air as you walk along the 1.8 mile harbour at Whitehaven with the sound of seagulls above your head. The Old Quay overlooks the magnificent Solway Firth and is ideal for an Insta friendly selfie. The port of Whitehaven is steeped in history and was once one of Britain’s biggest ports.
  10. Selfie Guide - Gummer's How
Best for: Creatives - Gummer's How, Windermere
This manageable walk is a source of inspiration all year round. Try watching the sunset over the lake, it’s breath-taking. Autumn is a special time to visit as a kaleidoscope of colour bursts out of the rich Lakeland vegetation surrounding the Lake. It’s always a great photo, whenever you visit.
  11. TV & Film Locations - Kirkby Lonsdale. Photo courtesy of Woodclose Park.
Best for: Couples - Ruskin’s View, Kirkby Lonsdale
If you are looking for together time, the enchanting Ruskin’s View is the scene of a famous painting by Turner. As if that wasn’t praise enough, John Ruskin was also known to have said that it is ‘one of the loveliest scenes in England’. It’s just crying out for a photo.
