Welcome to July in the Lake District, Cumbria. From miles upon miles of stunning coastline to delicious food, amazing attractions and fascinating history, there’s so much to discover and enjoy.
Dotted with seaside towns, cultural attractions, estuaries brimming with wildlife and wide sandy beaches, the Cumbrian coast is a spectacular place to visit. Stretching from Morecambe Bay all the way up to the Scottish borders, you’ll find plenty to explore.
A rich history awaits: the Frontiers of the Roman Empire UNESCO World Heritage Site runs all the way down to Ravenglass – which is uniquely located in two World Heritage Sites, as it also stands in the Lake District National Park. Visit museums telling the story of the Romans, as well as maritime tales of pirates, smugglers and ship building in towns like Maryport, Whitehaven and Barrow in Furness.
Fancy a walk? The Coast to Coast Path National Trail begins in St Bees, while the King Charles III England Coast Path is a scenic option whether you choose to do it all in one go, or section by section. There are plenty of shorter walks, too.
If you’re a nature enthusiast, there’s lots to discover. The Cumbrian Coast is home to two National Landscapes: the Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape and the Solway Coast National Landscape. See grey seals on the South Walney Nature Reserve, and visit the St Bees Heritage Coast.
There’s plenty by way of arts & culture, too. Ulverston was the birthplace of Stan Laurel, while you’ll find food festivals in towns like Maryport, Wigton and Cockermouth. There are also fantastic theatres, impressive castles and beautiful country houses to explore.
Why not explore by train? The Furness railway line runs from Silverdale to Barrow in Furness before joining up with the Cumbrian Coast Line through to Carlisle. The views along the way are spectacular.
With so much to do, why not stay a few days? We have plenty of superb accommodation options suitable for all – from luxury hotels to accessible glamping pods, there’s plenty to choose from.
