You are here: Home > Explore Cumbria > Areas of Cumbria > Carlisle & Hadrian’s Wall
Explore the edge of an ancient empire by walking in the footsteps of the Roman army along the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site. Birdoswald Fort and Banks Turret are just two must-sees (and don’t miss the 13th century Lanercost Priory on another former Roman site). If you prefer exploring on two wheels, the 174 mile Hadrian's Cycleway guides you through all the main Roman landmarks.
There’s no shortage of history in Carlisle itself, where the formidable fortress of Carlisle Castle stands proud over the cityscape. Explore the city’ historic quarter and gasp at the awe-inspiring splendour of Carlisle Cathedral. Did you know you can see Napoleon’s drums at Cumbria Museum of Military Life or come face to face with Drigsby the whale at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery?
For city living and café culture, Carlisle is the place to be. From swanky restaurants and cocktail bars to street food and thriving outdoor cafes, there’s something to suit every taste and budget. What’s more, the city centre has a leafy, laid-back vibe and an abundance of retail therapy – from unique family-run giftshops to the big high street names you’d expect in a 21st century city. There are 60 stores in the Lanes Shopping Centre alone.
To the west of Carlisle, the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Beauty is the perfect place to reconnect with nature. Hugging the Cumbrian coastline, Bowness-on-Solway is home to epic sunsets with majestic views across the water to Scotland.
Head east from the city and you’ll discover more big open spaces at the family-friendly Talkin Tarn Country Park. Along with outdoor theatre and events, there’s orienteering, archery, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding to enjoy.
The nearby market town of Brampton is crammed with independent retailers, characterful pubs and scrumptious eateries. Surrounded by gently rolling countryside there’s also easy access to the more rugged landscape of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The high scenic setting of Tindale Tarn is just one unexpected delight.
In 2022, Hadrian’s Wall celebrates its 1900th anniversary, and Hadrian’s Wall 1900 is a year long festival dedicated to this impressive milestone. Find out more here.
