The final stretch of the Cumbria Coastal Route follows the Solway Coast.
From Maryport, the route heads north along the Solway Firth, where peaceful landscapes and expansive views are in plentiful supply. This is a National Landscape, known for its salt marshes, dunes, and rugged cliffs. Home to important wildlife habitats, it’s also a great place for walking, cycling and bird spotting.
Along the way, you’ll pass through small coastal villages like Allonby, with sea views and a handful of independent shops and places to eat.
Then, it’s on to the Victorian seaside town of Silloth, with its centrally located green, promenade, and views stretching all the way to Scotland on a clear day.
This stretch of coast is also rich in history. As you travel through the coastal village of Bowness on Solway, stop to see one end of the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail and admire the stunning views across the Solway Firth.
As you turn inland, the journey leads to Carlisle - a historic border city with a vibrant centre, impressive cathedral and a wealth of stories to discover.
