Getting Around

However you choose to travel, the Cumbria Coastal Route is easy to explore. From scenic road trips to coastal walks and train journeys with a view, there are lots of ways to enjoy the route.

By Car

Make it a road trip and enjoy the freedom to explore on your own schedule. The Cumbria Coastal Route is perfect for travelling by car, with well-connected roads and plenty of opportunities to stop along the way - from seaside towns and peaceful beaches to attractions just off the main route.

On Foot

Sections of the King Charles III England Coast Path run along the Cumbria Coast, from Walney Island in the south to the Solway Coast in the north. Exploring on foot is a great way to see the route, and with train stations along the way you can easily hop on and off to break the journey up.

By Bike

Cycling offers a rewarding way to take in the scenery, with a number of established routes along the coast. The Hadrian’s Cycleway (NCN 72) runs down the coast to Ravenglass, while the Bay Cycleway follows the shoreline of Morecambe Bay. For a more relaxed ride, the Solway Coaster is a flat, tarmacked, family-friendly 14.1km route between Allonby and Silloth.
Bike hire is available at various points along the route, so it’s easy to explore on two wheels.

Buses & Trains

Public transport provides a convenient and scenic way to travel along the coast.
If you want to explore by train, the Furness Line and the Cumbria Coast Line (both operated by Northern) run through many of the towns and villages along the route, with spectacular coastal views along the way. Services connect with major operators including Avanti West Coast, Northern and TransPennine Express, making it easy to reach the Cumbria Coastal Route from across the UK.
A range of local bus services also operate along the coast, linking key destinations and providing flexible options for getting around without a car.
