The Grand Tour brings together the full 200-mile Cumbria Coastal Route - from the tidal landscapes of Morecambe Bay to the striking beauty of the Solway Coast - offering a complete experience of Cumbria’s diverse coastline.

Along the way, discover everything from seaside towns and world-class food to rugged headlands, hidden beaches and Roman heritage. Every section of the route offers something different.

The journey at a glance

Morecambe Bay (J36 to Ulverston)

Begin your journey on Cumbria’s southern coastline, with its ever-changing tidal landscapes and a standout foodie scene. Explore Arnside, Grange-over-Sands and Ulverston; and don’t miss Cartmel - a village known for its Michelin-starred dining and famous sticky toffee pudding.

The Furness Peninsula (Ulverston to Haverigg)

Follow the coast to Barrow-in-Furness to discover a shipbuilding heritage and the wildlife-rich Walney Island, visit Piel Castle by boat, and continue north to Haverigg via the striking RSPB Hodbarrow Nature Reserve.

Where the Lakes meet the Sea (Haverigg to Seascale)

Experience one of the most dramatic sections of the route, where the Lake District fells meet Cumbria’s coast. From beachside stops to heritage railways and castles, this stretch offers easy access to both mountains and sea.

A Coast of Contrasts (Seascale to Maryport)

A rugged and historic stretch of coastline, complete with red sandstone cliffs, heritage towns and maritime tales. Explore St Bees, Whitehaven and Maryport - each offering a different perspective on Cumbria’s past and present.

Solway to City (Maryport to Carlisle)

End your journey along the peaceful Solway Firth, with its salt marshes, wildlife and breathtaking sunsets. Follow the line of Hadrian’s Wall and finish in Carlisle, a historic border city with plenty to discover.
