The Lake District, Cumbria is the perfect place to be for fine dining. If you want to experience new flavours, tastes and sensations that reflect the rich landscape and the ever-changing seasons, you simply must sample one of our wonderful array of restaurants that have been recognized in the Michelin guide.
The quality of our local produce provide the pallet of ingredients for our world-renowned chefs. We’ve chosen some of our favourites to add to your bucket list.
Askham Hall, Askham, Penrith CA10 2PF
Askham Hall is situated in the stunning Eden Valley. This historic stately home and gardens is home to the Michelin Star restaurant Allium, with Cumbrian born Head Chef Richard Swale.
The Michelin guide says:
"Locally born chef Richard Swale oversees the kitchen, offering a concise menu with just two choices at each course. These dishes are driven by the seasons and the availability of produce from the Lowther Estate, in which the castle sits. The gardener plays an important part in guiding the menu, advising which ingredients are at their peak and what to plant next."
As part of our 'Bite-size interviews series' Darren from Visit Lake District caught up with Richard Swale from Askham Hall recently for a quick chat about how using the best in local Cumbrian produce makes all the difference. View the video interview here.

“Chef Ben Wilkinson has made the place his own and there is a quiet confidence to his cooking. Top quality ingredients and classic techniques take the lead, and there is a certain sophistication to the well-balanced flavour pairings – and while skilfully making the dishes look eye-catching, he manages to avoid over-elaboration.”
