The Furness Peninsula

Furness Peninsula - Cumbria Coastal RouteIndustrial heritage, sweeping coastal views and a spot of island hopping: welcome to the Furness Peninsula.

Leaving Ulverston behind, this section of the route takes you along the coastal road towards Barrow-in-Furness, with sweeping views across Morecambe Bay and out to the Irish sea. In Barrow, visit The Dock Museum to learn more about the area’s shipbuilding heritage before exploring Walney Island and its two nature reserves, home to a variety of wildlife including birds, butterflies and Cumbria’s only grey seal colony.

Also in Barrow, don’t miss a trip to Piel Castle: accessible by boat, it’s home to the King of Piel - he’s also landlord of the local pub!

Continuing north, the route winds along the coast and through the countryside to Millom, a small village with a rich mining heritage and home to the RSPB Hodbarrow Nature Reserve - a coastal lagoon and grasslands. This is where this section of the route ends, but if you have time, why not visit the nearby fishing village of Haverigg: a great base for walking up Black Combe, whose peak offers stunning views over the Irish Sea.
