About

South Walney isolated position on the southern tip of Walney Island makes it a special place for wildlife and people. It is a haven for bird life, many of which nest on the shingle beaches in the spring. There are several trails to walk, bird hides to sit in and rest, and to take in the views along the way. We have an off-road mobility tramper available for less mobile visitors.

The nature reserve is the only place in the north west England where grey seals haul out of the sea to rest. 500 seals have been counted resting on the beaches in one of our surveys. In autumn, seal pups are born on the beaches and can be spotted on our seal cam, available to view on our website. Although visitors cannot access the beaches to view the seals we have a wildlife hide overlooking the beach.

Walney Island is accessed by road via Barrow-in-Furness. Please book the mobility tramper in advance by calling 01539 816300.

No dogs are allowed at South Walney Nature Reserve because of the risk of disturbance to the wildlife.
