St Bees Village

St Bees is a pretty coastal village full of character, with sandstone buildings. It has been a popular holiday destination for over 150 years, with easy access by rail via its own railway station; bus services and by car. St Bees Priory Church stands out in the village, with its magnificent Norman doorway.

Nearby St Bees Head rises to a height of over 300 ft and has an RSPB bird reserve with one of the largest colonies of sea birds on the west coast of England, the only place in England where Black Guillemot breed. The sandstone cliffs looking across to the Isle of Man support an interesting array of flora and fauna.

The magnificent, mile-long, sandy beach at St Bees is one of the best on the whole Western Lake District coast and was named a Seaside Award Beach in 2005 in recognition of its cleanliness. It's great for making sandcastles and paddling and there is lots of fun to be had exploring tidal rock pools too. The wide promenade along this popular beach, which is the start of the famous Wainwright 'Coast to Coast walk, has good wheelchair access, toilet facilities and a pleasant children's play area.
