Maryport's extensive harbour and Promenade are a pleasure to stroll around. Keep your eyes peeled as you may spot a Harbour Porpoise which visit from time to time. The harbour has a 180 berth 4 Star Gold Anchor Marina, operated by a private company; harbourisde caravan park with touring pitches and hard standing for boats. Fishing, boats still operate out of the harbour and together with pleasure craft, make a very colourful sight.
Maryport like many other harbours in this area was once mainly concerned with the export of coal. Together with iron and steel, vast quantities were exported through Maryport. Shipbuilding also had a place here.
