The Cumbria Coastal Route is rich in arts and culture. Along the way, you’ll find everything from castles and country houses to theatres, galleries and museums.
Step back in time at impressive castles and stately homes, where centuries of history are brought to life through grand architecture, landscaped gardens and interesting collections. From medieval strongholds to impressive country estate, there’s lots to explore. Some even host festivals, live music, Christmas markets and more within their grounds!
The route is also home to a range of museums and heritage attractions, exploring everything from maritime and industrial history to Roman Britain. Along the Solway Coast, connections to Hadrian’s Wall reveal Cumbria’s role as the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire, while coastal towns offer insight into shipbuilding, trade and local life.
Along the route, visit independent galleries showcasing local artists, or discover outdoor artworks and trails that make the most of the coastal setting - including sculptures and installations inspired by the landscape and its history.
For live entertainment, theatres and performance venues along the coast host a varied programme of events, from drama and music to comedy and community productions. Visit places like Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven, and keep an eye out for events and festivals at cultural attractions.
