About

The Lake District Calvert Trust is a unique outdoor adventure centre dedicated to providing life-changing experiences for people with disabilities. Set in the heart of the stunning Lake District, the centre offers fully accessible accommodation and a wide range of adaptable adventurous activities, including climbing, canoeing, abseiling, ziplining, horse riding and swimming.

With expert instructors and specialist equipment, every experience is tailored to individual needs, building confidence, independence, and enjoyment in a safe and supportive environment. The Lake District Calvert Trust is a place where everyone can challenge themselves, have fun, and discover what they’re capable of.

Accessible and Inclusive Courses

The centre offers residential adventure holidays, and occasional day activities, for people with disabilities, their friends, families, colleagues and carers. Only one person in a booking needs to have a disability to visit Calvert Lakes. Stays range from 2-night weekend to 4- night midweek breaks, week-long and themed courses, that cater to individuals, families and groups alike.

Our breaks are fully catered, and all our bedrooms specially adapted for even the most complex of needs. All equipment required for activities is included too. The only thing you need to arrange is who to bring with you how to get here!

Lake District Calvert Trust has offered accessible adventures for 50 years and shares a love of the great outdoors with visitors of all abilities. This very special place is open to locals and visitors for swimming in the on-site hydrotherapy pool and horse riding sessions at Calvert Stables.

Hydrotherapy Swimming Pool

Our fully accessible hydrotherapy swimming pool is open to locals, visitors and centre residents, and can be booked ad hoc or in blocks of sessions. With a range of accessibility equipment available and plenty of space for showering and changing, our swimming pool sessions are very popular.

Our water centre includes:

  • A fully accessible 12x6m multi-sensory hydrotherapy pool
  • Light, sound and projection to stimulate the senses
  • Stunning views across Bassenthwaite Lake from the pool
  • Sensory features include a spa, bubble pads and a water fountain – all activated by poolside buttons
  • Warm and welcoming water set at a balmy 32°C
  • The pool floor can be raised or lowered to alter water depth and aid even those living with the most profound disabilities to enjoy the water (requires advance notice)
  • Spacious family changing rooms plus poolside changing rooms with hoists
  • The pool can be booked for private use, or guests can join a public session with a maximum of 24 swimmers
  • A range of swimming sessions from early bird swims to twilight sessions – see website for more details
