About

Set in a beautiful private nature reserve around a stream fed lake teeming with wildlife; The Tranquil Otter is an ideal place for a relaxing break, for families and couples. We have eight 5* Luxury Lodges and one 5 bed oak framed house, each with breath-taking views across the Lough.

In each lodge you'll find fully equipped kitchen, lounge, and bedrooms with fabulous views of the lake, a private deck with its own hot-tub and overlooking the Lough - which means that you can simply relax and unwind whilst gazing across the lake and its own glorious birdlife.

Seven of the lodges are on one level and accessed via a gentle ramp from a dedicated parking space. Each lodge has a well-equipped kitchen, log fire, Smart TV, with DVD player, high speed internet, hot tub and boat.

One lodge, Alder (sleeps 5 people), is on two floors, but has one downstairs bedroom with a wheel in shower.

Guest are welcome to walk in the woodlands, boat on the lake and walk around the lake and let the safely kids explore. A bird hide is available to all our guests.

With our high-speed internet guests can share photos with family and friends. Our guest handbook provides information about things to do locally.

Well behaved dogs are welcome by prior arrangement.

The Tranquil Otter woodland walk is wheelchair accessible.

Peaceful breaks for couples and families. We do not cater for hen or stag parties.

Road Directions

DIRECTIONS FROM THE SOUTH OR EAST: JUNCTION 43 M6

1. Take exit A69 road to Carlisle passing a Land Rover dealership on your left. 2. Go straight for about a mile and take the first right (Victoria Place) at traffic lights soon after "The Beehive" pub (left-hand side). The road is signed A595 West and is just after some car-parking signs, but the sign is easy to miss! Follow the road around a left-hand bend and at the lights turn right (Georgian Way) taking the left-hand lane on a short stretch of a dual carriageway. 3. At Hardwick Circus roundabout take the first exit on to Castle Way, passing the Carlisle Castle on your right and city centre on your left. Get into the right-hand lane. 4. Keep straight through the next two sets of traffic lights, passing Sainsbury's on your right. Get into the right-hand lane approaching the roundabout and take the second exit the B5307, signposted for the Cumberland Infirmary. 5. Follow this road for about 2 miles until you reach Moorhouse Road roundabout. Take the third exit signposted B5307 for Kirkbride. 6. Approximately 3 miles after this roundabout you will pass through Moorhouse Village. 7. About ½ mile after Moorhouse you will see a large barn on your right next to a sign for Bramblebeck Farm, a little further you’ll see a sign for Bramblebeck Park on the left and the road curves to the right. The “Thurstonfield” village sign is in this bend, indicate left after you pass the village sign. 8. We are the first drive you come to on the left, discreetly signed "The Tranquil Otter", with white stones up the side. This is about 50 metres before the 30-mph speed limit sign going into Thurstonfield village. 9. Go straight up the lane; please note that there are speedbumps. Please take the right-hand fork, after 20 yards, for the Lough House only, otherwise straight ahead for the lodges.  Find your lodge using the map below. The key code emailed to you will let you into your lodge. FROM THE NORTH: (YOU CAN ALSO TAKE THIS ROUTE FROM THE SOUTH IF YOU WANT TO BYPASS CARLISLE)

1. Exit the M6 at junction 44 and take the exit marked A689, signposted Workington and A595. This route is via a bypass which has not yet made it on some SatNav systems. 2. You will cross the river Eden after which you arrive at the “Burgh Road” roundabout, go straight here (second exit) arriving soon after at next “Moorhouse Road” roundabout, here take the fourth exit for Kirkbride B5307. 3. Approximately 3 miles after this roundabout you will pass through Moorhouse Village. 4. 5. We are the first drive you come to on the left, discreetly signed "The Tranquil Otter", with white stones up the side. This is about 50 metres before the 30 mph speed limit sign going into Thurstonfield village. 6. Go straight up the lane for the lodges or to the right for the Lough House.
