Curated and hosted by poet Kim Moore, our contemporary poetry reading series continues throughout 2024. We will be listening to what poets have to say about our turbulent times, and how poetry can cross borders to challenge, delight and inspire us. Each online event in the series is part reading, part open mic – and the theme of the open mic changes every month!
Our next event will feature poet and novelist Katie Hale. Katie's debut collection White Ghosts won a Northern Debut award. Her novels include My Name is Monster as well as her forthcoming novel The Edge of Solitude. White Ghosts is a haunting, haunted book which examines the entanglement of white privilege, slavery, immigration and power through the tracing of the matrilineal line. William Wordsworth, our presiding spirit of this reading series, was also interested in ideas of haunting – he was haunted by 'the sounding cataract' that haunted him 'like a passion' – but he also wrote about the way the mind was also 'beset / With images, and haunted by herself'. Our open mic theme this month is to bring a poem that contains a haunting – whether that is by a ghost, a mind haunting itself, being haunted by nature or memory – please feel free to interpret this theme widely!
Open mic slots are limited and must be booked in advance. Each open mic poem should be no longer than two minutes. Email Kim Moore at wordsworthreadingseries@outlook.com for a slot. Slots do book up quickly, so don't leave it to the last minute!
