From guided alpaca walks to artisanal workshops on everything from glass cutting to boat building, a Cumbrian winter is one long festival of activities. Sure, it’s chilly and there’s a chance of snow on the (high) ground. Probably not ideal for a dip in the lake, but a winter cruise is the ideal way to experience winter’s ethereal charm – just be sure to wrap up. However cold it is, it’s nothing that can’t be fixed by a gourmet meal by a roaring fire in a country pub, or a glass of two of local ale after a walk in the fells.
And nobody does Christmas quite like the Lake District, Cumbria. Put a warm cup of mulled wine into your mittened hands and watch the Christmas lights come in Ambleside before exploring Cumbria’s wonderful collection of winter markets. Travel back in time at the Keswick Victorian Fayre or in Ulverston, which recreates Dickens’ A Christmas Carol complete with characters in 19th century costume, horse-drawn carriages and even a Victorian helter skelter.
