Heavyweights of the Cumbrian and International art world are joining together to take part in Rock Solid?2 from 9th May to 29th June. This exhibition at the People's Gallery, Kendal Museum will run alongside a series of events including an art trail through Kendal town centre with a dozen participating shops. Rock Solid?2 explores the Lake District landscape and the plan to use coastal geology to contain atomic wastes. Artists have spent time sketching from the fascinating collections of Cumbrian geology at the Museum.
Co-ordinator and artist Marianne Birkby says "this is a unique celebration of Lakeland's jewel-like geology, landscape, flora and fauna seen through the lens of a 'quixotic' plan to bury atomic wastes deep under the Cumbrian coast and the sea." West Cumbrian "South and Mid Copeland" are two of three places in the UK considering Nuclear Waste Services delivery of a Geological Disposal Facility for heat generating nuclear wastes.
Guest artist Martin Greenland, winner of the John Moore's Painting Prize, is joined by 20 artists including internationally renowned mountain painter Julian Cooper and Russell Mills who has produced records for some of the biggest names in rock music, also participating are Lake Artist Society award winners Kate Bentley and Andrea Pentecost.
Alongside beautiful paintings of the Lake District are installations of "Hauntology of the Geological Disposal Facility" by Steve Wallis and "Whited Sepulchres" by Irene Rogan. Co-ordinator Marianne says "Altogether 20 artists have produced artworks including comic books, installations, sculpture and multi-media in a vibrant and thought provoking exhibition - a must see for all those who love Cumbria!"
