A story or novel without conflict is dull and won't engage the reader, and dramatic tension keeps readers wanting to read more. In this friendly, informal class, Emma will teach you different types of conflict and how you can introduce them in your writing. She will help you understand what dramatic tension is and will give you ideas about how to include it in your writing, to develop your plot and characters and keep your reader hooked. There will be plenty of time for putting these ideas into practice, with writing exercises throughout the morning. You can then use these ideas in your own work.
Emma is a teacher with 26 years' experience and is passionate about helping people develop their creativity, through creative discussion and writing.
The morning will be informal and supportive and an opportunity for you to meet like-minded people.
Previous students in Emma's creative writing classes at Rheged have commented:
'Emma encourages creativity which I didn't know I had.'
'Very relaxed, lots of tips to take forward.'
'My first course in 17 years. I enjoyed all of it.'
Who would enjoy this course? The class is suitable for those new to creative writing as well as people with some experience who are looking to develop their skills. It will take place in the Pink Room at Rheged, a calm, contemporary space that allows for creative thinking.
There is unlimited complementary teas, coffee, water and biscuits available, and you will be able to help yourself throughout the morning.
You are welcome to write on a device such as a laptop or a notepad/paper and your favourite pen or pencil.
