Home to the Hasell family since 1679, visitors to Dalemain will discover a fascinating combination of history, architecture and family which is both a Cumbrian and national story. Dalemain is an award-winning delight and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits with glorious views to the High Fells amid open parkland, encapsulating the best of the Lake District, and should be the first stop as you explore Cumbria.
Inside the house, there is a nationally important collection of furniture, fine art and ceramics. In particular, there is one of the earliest examples of hand-painted Chinese wallpaper from the mid-18th century. Past the grandeur of the Palladian architecture, you will come to the older part of the building. Dalemain truly is an accumulation of different time periods over hundreds of years. Throughout you will discover a rich collection of everyday objects, period furniture and stories of the past.
The Garden is just as interesting with a national standard collection of plants including over 200 old fashioned roses and the Abies Cephalonica Fir Tree with the largest girth in the UK. Along with a selection of rare and unusual herbaceous plants the highlight of the Garden is the Himalayan Blue Poppies Meconopsis Grandis Dalemain (May to June) which blankets the lower garden in purple and blue hues. The setting looking out to the High Lake District Fells is peaceful and unparalleled.
Disabled access does not extend to the lower garden or the upstairs areas of the house. Disabled parking is available in the Courtyard.
Dalemain is also home to the Dalemain World Marmalade Awards. A global competition searching for the world’s best marmalade makers. The Marmalade Shop, has a selection of the Dalemain range of marmalades along with the Best in Show for that year and a selection of Artisan Gold and Double Gold winners.
The Great Barn Tearoom is open throughout the day serving light lunches, homemade cakes, teas and coffees.
There is something of interest for all the family!
