'Find the key emotion; this may be all you need know to find your short story.'
F. Scott Fitzgerald
It's often said that we all have a novel in us, but many people find it difficult to create a long piece of writing. A short story is much more achievable for many and in this friendly, informal class, Emma will teach you how to create your own short story.
You will look at different ways that short story writers begin, so that they engage their reader from the very start, and practise some of these techniques yourself. Emma will help you to consider your characters, setting, plot, turning points and twists, and will teach you techniques you can use to reveal characters.
There will be plenty of time for putting these ideas and techniques into practice, with writing exercises throughout the afternoon. This could lead to you writing a complete short story, or making a start and finishing it in your own time - it is totally up to you.
Emma is a teacher with 26 years' experience and is passionate about helping people develop their creativity, through creative discussion and writing.
The afternoon will be informal and supportive and an opportunity for you to meet like-minded people.
Previous students in Emma's creative writing classes at Rheged have commented:
'Innovative prompts and exercises. Passionate, curious and supportive atmosphere.'
'Emma is knowledgeable and engaging.'
'Felt safe; very nicely paced.'
Who would enjoy this course? The class is suitable for those new to creative writing as well as people with some experience who are looking to develop their skills. It will take place in the Pink Room at Rheged, a calm, contemporary space that allows for creative thinking.
There is unlimited complementary teas, coffee, water and biscuits available, and you will be able to help yourself throughout the afternoon. You are welcome to write on a device such as a laptop or a notepad/paper and your favourite pen or pencil.
