About

Foulshaw Moss is an unusual habitat called a lowland raised mire – or a peat bog to you and me. This makes it a very special place to visit.

There are several flat boardwalks that take you across the bog: one to a viewing tower where you can take in the glorious view over to Morecambe Bay; another to the osprey viewing area (March-September), where we often have volunteers to help you spot our nesting ospreys. Follow the boardwalk on from here to the pond where you can spot dragonflies, including the unusual white-faced darter which is only found on lowland peat bogs in a couple of locations in Cumbria.

Previously a plantation, Cumbria Wildlife Trust has spent years restoring this special place. We have removed conifers and blocked drainage ditches to raise water levels, which allow the peat-forming sphagnum moss to grow, and locking-in the carbon that has been stored in the peat here for thousands of years.

Free to visit. Dogs on leads are welcome.
