Where the Lakes meet the Sea

Discover the rugged beauty of Cumbria’s coastline in the western part of the Lake District, where the Lakes meets the sea. 

Leaving Haverigg and Millom, the route follows the coast north through wide open landscapes and past peaceful beaches. Stop at Silecroft, where Cumbrian Heavy Horses offer riding experiences on the beach and the Sunset Cafe provides a great place to enjoy a bite to eat with impressive sea views. 

Then, it’s on to the village of Ravenglass which stands in two UNESCO World Heritage Sites -  the Lake District National Park and Frontiers of the Roman Empire - and offers easy access to some fantastic attractions.

Step aboard the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway for a scenic train journey from coast to countryside as you pass through the stunning landscapes of the western Lake District. Nearby, explore the historic grounds of Muncaster Castle and enjoy bird of prey flying displays, a medieval weapons hall where you can have a go yourself, and a regular programme of events and festivals.

The route continues to Drigg, where you’ll find the largest sand dune system in Cumbria, with an optional detour into the striking Wasdale valley - home to towering mountains and England’s deepest lake, Wastwater.

Culminating in the seaside village of Seascale, this section of the route captures the meeting point of coast and countryside with lots to explore.
