Dotted with seaside towns, cultural attractions, estuaries brimming with wildlife and wide sandy beaches with views to the Lakeland fells, the Cumbrian coast is a spectacular place to visit.
Enjoy a day at the beach, or step back in time and discover the local history - from Cistercian monks in Morecambe Bay to Roman heritage along the western coast. From famous figures to maritime heritage, told through modern museums and historic landmarks, there are plenty of places to learn more.
Art galleries and theatres host performances from local artists and international names, while there are outstanding places to eat and drink - from Michelin star dining to cosy pubs and beach cafes. Plus, accommodation options cater to everyone from families to solo travellers, with self catering, hotels, camping and glamping and more.
This breathtaking area can be explored in a multitude of ways. Long distance walking routes like the King Charles III England Coast Path or the Coast to Coast Path both offer scenic exploration on foot. There are also cycling trails like the Bay Cycle Way and the Solway Coaster.
For a scenic way to travel with stunning views along the way, the train is a great choice. The Furness railway line runs along the coast from Silverdale to Barrow-in-Furness, before joining with the Cumbrian Coast Railway line through to Carlisle; both offer awe-inspiring views from your window, and make for a greener way to get around.
Scenic seaside walks, stunning sunsets and moments of calm await along the Cumbria coast. Nature enthusiasts will be enthralled by the area’s everchanging landscapes: they’re home to an incredible variety of wildlife, from seals on South Walney Nature Reserve to birds like puffins, herring gulls and razorbills at the St Bees Head Heritage Coast and Nature Reserve. You’ll also find two National Landscapes: one in Arnside & Silverdale, the other on the Solway Coast. This is the perfect place to step away from the screen and enjoy space to breathe, explore, and reconnect.
Spend time with loved ones and make memories to last a lifetime. Enjoy fish and chips on the beach, ice cream by the sea, and nostalgic moments of timeless fun. Sample flavours both traditional and creative at food festivals in Maryport, Wigton and Cockermouth. Wander the grounds of a country hall, take a ride on a steam train, or explore a majestic castle.
Discover the unexpected along the Cumbria coast: whether it's horse riding along the beach at Silecroft or walking in the footsteps of the Romans along the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, there are new experiences waiting to be discovered. Make your own gin in Ulverston, meet the king of Piel Island in Barrow, and discover tales of the spice trade in Whitehaven. The opportunities for exploration are endless.
