Areas of Cumbria

Cumbria County Map - visitlakedistrict.comCumbria and the Lake District are often used interchangeably, such is the lure of the landscape of mountains and lakes that makes up one of England’s most beautiful regions. The Lake District is right in the mountainous heart of the county: England’s tallest peaks, biggest lakes and - to our mind, at least - most beautiful vistas are found here, within the protected confines of the Lake District National Park.

But there’s more to Cumbria than just the lakes. Beyond the north lakes is the county capital of Carlisle, a modern city with a rich and storied past: here you’ll find a mighty fortress in the heart of what was once known as the Debatable Lands - such was the centuries of struggle between Scots, English and the local clans known as Border Reivers. It is through here that Hadrian’s Wall was built.

To the west, Cumbria takes on a maritime flavour, with the towns and villages traditionally making a living from the sea and the mines that surround them. To the east, the Eden Valley and North Pennines and beyond, the beautiful valleys that belong to the Yorkshire Dales, an area we refer to as 'Where the Lakes meets the Dales'.

And finally south of the Lake District is the broad expanse of Morecambe Bay, its collection of elegant Victorian towns a fine reminder of the early days of tourism and, today, a foodie destination in their own right.

The map shows the different areas of the county and how they all combine to make the county of Cumbria. It also shows the location of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. Click on the map for a larger view.

Areas to explore

  1. Named England's most beautiful lake, Ullswater's scenery is truly breath-taking. With Pooley Bridge at the North and Glenridding to the South, walkers and visitors are drawn to this area. The stunning Aira Force waterfall is also located here.
    The Lake District
Welcome to the Lake District – where modern tourism was born. England’s best-known and most popular national park is a postcard landscape of shimmering lakes.
  2. Things to do around Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall
    Carlisle & Hadrian's Wall
What have the Romans ever done for us? The answer is along this 73-mile wall that, even now after nearly 2000 years, remains one of the most impressive feats of engineering ever.
  3. Penrith Town Centre
    Eden Valley & North Pennines
The Eden Valley is Cumbria at its most peaceful, a haven of pastoral calm and serenity that is the perfect spot to get away from it all, but without having to go too far.
  4. Things to do in The Lake District, Cumbria
    Morecambe Bay
Watching the sun go down over Morecambe Bay is the stuff memories are made of. The whole stretch of coastline is a stunner.
  5. Maryport
    Western Lakes & Coast
If you’ve come to the Western Lake District, chances are you’re looking for something a little more rugged, perhaps even a bit more secluded. You’ve made a fine choice!
  6. Sedbergh
Where the Lakes meets the Dales
Just beyond the northern Lake District lie the Yorkshire Dales, a picture-postcard patchwork of green valleys and high heather moorland dotted with traditional villages.

You may leave the Lake District, but once you’ve been, it’ll never leave you.
