About

The village of Bassenthwaite lies around 1 mile east of Bassenthwaite Lake. The lake is the most northerly of the lakes and is also one of the largest. It is also the only true lake of the Lake District. All the others are meres or waters.
The lake is one of the quietest in the Lake District, but is also home to it's own sailing club.
Bassenthwaite has an amazing array of wildlife including ospreys. In 2001, for the first time in 150 years, wild ospreys nested in Bassenthwaite. Since then a special viewing platform has been erected to cater for the 25,000 people that came to see these fish-eating birds of prey.

From the M6 motorway, leave at the Penrith junction 40. Take the A66 signposted for Keswick, carry on past Keswick heading towards Cockermouth, once at a main roundabout take theA591 to Bassenthwaite.
