Comedy, Creativity & Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding

Laurel & Hardy Statue, Ulverston

The area around Morecambe Bay and Cartmel peninsula makes for an exciting day full of interesting places to go, things to see and great food. Read on for a one-day itinerary with some of our favourite places to visit.

For up-to-date information, we strongly advise that you visit the websites of the below sites and businesses. Always book ahead, please observe social distancing and stay safe at all times.

MORNING – FURNESS ABBEY AND LAUREL & HARDY MUSEUM

Furness Abbey comprises of the impressive remains of an abbey founded by Stephen, later King of England, including much of the east and west tower of the church, the ornately decorated chapter house and the cloister buildings. There is also an exhibition on the history of the abbey in the visitor centre.

Just a 20-minute drive away is the Laurel & Hardy Museum. Based in Ulverston, the birthplace of Stan Laurel, this museum illustrates his early life and career as one half of the famous comedy duo. Stop by Ulverston’s multi award-winning Shed 1 Distillery for a gin tasting, afternoon G&Tea or even a ‘Make Your Own Gin Experience’.

Next, head to Cumbria Crystal (directions below).

Arrive at Cumbria Crystal

Cumbria Crystal is England’s last working crystal glassware factory. A team of 22 highly skilled artisans are committed to creating crystal using techniques that have barely changed since the Roman era. Cumbria Crystal strives to produce the highest quality products so it is hardly surprising it is the crystal of choice for the British Embassies, many Royal Families and Luxury Stores worldwide. It has been showcased extensively in Downton Abbey, James Bond and many period dramas.

A 20 minute drive from Ulverston is the medieval village of Cartmel, which has a rich heritage with plenty to explore. At the heart of the village sits a 12th Century priory surrounded by lovely cafes and shops, most significantly the Cartmel Village Shop which sells the world famous Sticky Toffee Pudding. One of the prettiest villages in all of Cumbria, Cartmel is a picture-postcard destination, with a delightful olde-worlde feel. Its ancient racecourse still hosts one of England’s most famous racing festivals. Cartmel boasts a number of delightful eateries, including two Michelin Star restaurants – L’Enclume and Rogan & Co.
