Stay Safe in the Outdoors

The Lake District, Cumbria, is home to some stunning landscapes - and there are plenty of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. From watersports to hiking, there’s so much to discover. When out and about enjoying the area, always stay safe and be Adventure Smart. As yourself three questions before you head off on your adventure:

  1. Do I have the right gear?
  2. Do I know what the weather will be like?
  3. Am I confident that I have the knowledge and skills for the day?

If you want to learn a new skill or just enjoy a great day out, there are lots of local guides and activity centres running outdoor adventures with expert, local instruction to help you stay safe and have an experience to remember.

Be Lake District Kind

Help us to look after our beautiful area for generations to come by following the Countryside Code, using public car parks, and taking your litter home. Remember: take only photographs, leave only footprints.

Wild camping (fly camping) isn’t permitted without the landowner’s permission. Instead, opt for one of the many scenic campsites across the Lake District, Cumbria. From quieter, ‘wild feeling’ sites to glamping and plentiful facilities, it’s a great way to enjoy the area and get the full camping experience with views to match.

Barbecues and open fires are not permitted anywhere in the Lake District. Disposable barbecues are environmentally damaging, risk to wildlife, a fire hazard and often result in litter in the National Park. Most major landowners agreed to ban visitors from having barbecues or fires on their land to help look after our National Park. Please respect this special place and leave no trace.

Always dispose of waste properly and leave no trace, so those who follow can enjoy the landscape as you found it.

Van Life

If you’re visiting in your van or motorhome, we’ve got lots of useful tips and resources on our Van Life page to help you enjoy our county’s scenic highlights without compromising its sensitive landscape. This includes a downloadable accommodation guide, information on waste disposal, and a Motor Caravanners Code.
