Langdale Rambler 516 and Langdale Hopper 517

516 service- Daily until 2nd November 2025.

The 516 service runs every hour seven days a week, with new early morning journeys and a last return bus at 8.10pm which continues to Windermere and Kendal. On Friday and Saturday there are later journeys to allow you to extend your visit. Change at Ambleside for buses to/from
Grasmere; Kendal; Keswick; Windermere.

New for 2025 on Saturday and Sundays in July and August there will be a shuttle minibus from Ambleside to Little Langdale, for access to walk and Cathedral Quarry. The shuttlebus will run eight times a day and will drop passengers at the Three Shires Inn.

If visiting Cathedral Quarry, it is about a mile walk. Continue uphill along the road to the turn marked “Tilberthwaite”. Turn left and follow this road for 600 metres to the ford. Cross using the pedestrian bridge and turn right. Follow the signs along the track for 150 metres to the main entrance gate. There is no pavement so be aware of other traffic.

Please be aware there are no toilets, café or bins at the quarry. Please plan ahead and leave no rubbish behind. The nearest facilities are at Elterwater or Ambleside.

When the 517 is not running there is a footpath from Elterwater on the hourly 516 route from Ambleside to Langdale.
There are also now early morning service 516 buses between Ambleside and Langdale, with connections possible at Ambleside with buses to or from Kendal, Windemere, Grasmere and Keswick.

On Friday and Saturday there are extra later buses, so you can stay in the valley until 10.30pm, or if staying in the valley have a longer day out and return from Ambleside at 9.55pm.

Concessionary Travel passes accepted for Free travel after 9.30am on weekdays and all journeys on Weekends.
Central Lakes Day Ticket (£10) and One Day Explorer (£12) accepted.
