The Lake District, Cumbria is a unique landscape, with dramatic and beautiful views around every corner. No wonder it's a favourite place for people to visit who wish to relax, recharge the batteries and get away from it all. Such a unique place deserves exploring.

There are a number of ways to get around the county using public transport, two wheels and on foot. To help you, we've put together a series of sustainable fun days out, each one making best use of sustainable travel around the county.

Coniston Itinerary 

An extensive itinerary which enables you to explore Coniston and the surrounding area, take in Beatrix Potter attractions, Cruise on the Coniston Launch, explore local walks with rewarding views and indulge in local food and ale for a well earned rest. Discover the area with its beautiful woodlands, craggy mountains, idyllic streams and waterfalls. Coniston village has lots to offer with cute traditional shops, a host of cafes and pubs and a fine selection of visitor attractions.

3 great 'do in a day' walks  from the Coniston Rambler bus service, plus inspirational days out.
Walks include ' Wansfell Pike from Ambleside', 'Hawkshead to Latterbarrow' and Yewdale and Tarn Hows from Coniston'.

Coniston to Torver Trail (Cycle route)

Coniston used to have its own railway line with a terminus station in the village and this cycle trail follows a section of the former line. A good beginners route covering 6 miles of Mainly off-road cycle trails with gently undulating hills.

Langdale Trail (Cycle Route)

Leave the traffic and crowds behind to discover the glaciated valley of Langdale, tarns and waterfalls following riverside cycle paths and bridleways. There are two recommended rides: a beginner’s ride starting in Elterwater which is entirely free of traffic and ideal for young families, and a longer intermediate ride with some climbs and descents which starts at Stickle Ghyll car park in Great Langdale.

This route is perfectly suited to beginners and those looking for a gentle ride. Following a section of the former railway path for approx 6 miles in a return trip.

Windermere West Shore Trail 

An easy ride or walk to Wray Castle on traffic-free bridleways, with view across Lakes Windermere. Easily accessible from Brockhole, The Lake District Visitor Centre by Bike Boat and Bowness-on-Windermere by ferry.

Easy Cycling South Lakes Guide

6 cycling routes around the South Lakes area for you to enjoy, all in one easy-to-use guide. Routes include 'The Windermere West Shore Cycle Trail', 'The Torver Trail', 'Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge on the Langdale Trail', 'Great Langdale to Skelwith Bridge', 'Claife Heights Mountain Bike Route' and 'The Kentmere Valley'.

Discover the Duddon Valley

Have a fantastic day out exploring the Duddon Valley, where you can get away from the crowds and get closer to nature. This area has had an interesting past, and over the centuries has played host to hunters, smugglers, worshipers and artists. The famous poet William Wordsworth wrote many sonnets about the Duddon, a river he knew and loved. This walk is 16 km (about 5 hours) so it’s great for a full day of activity. Remember to leave plenty of time for photo opportunities, wildlife spotting and a relaxing lunch!

3 do-in-a-day walks from the 508 bus

The 508 bus goes between Windermere and Penrith and along that route, we've put together 3 great short-ish walks that take in the sights of this beautiful area of the county. Route 1 - a level route takes you along the wooded shoreline of Brothers Water; Route 2 - Glenridding to Aira Force - a spanning woodland with lush green ferns and evergreen specimen conifers, taking in the magnificent tumbling waterfall of Aira Force and Route 3 - Pooley Bridge to Gale Bay - a linear route along the shore of Ullswater, providing superb views along the northern reaches of the lake.

The 599 bus goes between Lakeside, on the aouthern shore of Windermere to Grasmere and along that route we've put together 3 walks to help you see the best of the area. Route 1 - Lakeside to Stott Park Bobbin Mill; Route 2 - Windermere's Western Shore
to Wray Castle and Route 3 - A circuit of Grasmere.
